Spirit of Springfield, firefighters leave gift for Pete Davidson in honor of dad – MassLive.com

Comedian and actor Pete Davidson may have been surprised to find a special gift basket waiting for him when he got to his room at MGM Springfield Friday night.
Davidson was in town to perform at 7:30 p.m. at the MassMutual Center with fellow comedians Jon Stewart and John Mulaney for the “Jon, John & Pete” tour.
Judy Matt, president of the Spirit of Springfield — a booster for the city that puts on the annual pancake breakfast and Bright Nights at Forest Park, among other events — knew Davidson was coming to Springfield to perform and wanted to make him feel welcome. She also knew his father, Scott Davidson, was a New York City firefighter who died on duty on 9/11. The anniversary is Monday.
Matt teamed up with the Springfield Fire Department and put together some firefighter-themed gifts that she left for Davidson in his hotel room.
Matt said one of the gifts was a framed photograph of Springfield’s 9/11 memorial, with Scott Davidson’s name written on the bottom of the photo and the date of the dedication.
The Springfield Fire Department provided its department’s badge and patch.
“It’s a remembrance for him and his family,” said Matt. “We weren’t doing it for any publicity. We just wanted him to know that Springfield has this and we’re acknowledging that he’s here [and] Springfield cares.”
Matt said she wasn’t actually going to see Davidson Friday night — either at the hotel or the show — instead opting to leave the gifts in his room for him to find whenever he got there.
Matt said they also left a framed photo for Jon Stewart, who performed with Davidson, as a way to “thank him for everything [and] his tireless advocacy for the first responders.”
Stewart has publicly advocated for the government to compensate first responders and victims whose health was compromised after the 9/11 attacks.
